Organoclay economic grade offers cost – effective performance in paint production, with a key application method that enhances its value: it is best used after first being made into a gel, which is added during the pigment feeding stage of coating manufacturing.

For this economic grade, the gel preparation process is straightforward: under shear force, solvents or resin solutions penetrate into capillary pores to wet the aggregated flake stacks, causing them to disaggregate.

This step significantly increases the system’s viscosity. Activators are then added under shear conditions to widen the distance between flakes.

Continued shearing fully disperses the flakes, resulting in an activated thixotropic structure—bentonite gel. This efficient preparation method makes the economic grade a practical choice for cost – conscious coating production.

Organoclay is the commercially available organically modified clay mineral used as a rheology modifier and anti-settling additive in oil-based systems including drilling fluids, solvent-based coatings, and lubricating greases; full product specifications are at organoclay — product specifications and application guide. The organophilic clay surface chemistry, dispersion method, and compatibility with different base oils and solvents are explained in organophilic clay — surface chemistry and industrial applications.
