The general dispersion grade of organoclay excels in achieving good dispersion across different applications, relying on proper activator use in the pre – gel process.

For this grade, activators in pre – gel formulations serve to break down and disperse bentonite flakes, while introducing water into hydrophobic organic solvents to maintain the hydrogen bond strength of the bentonite network.

Low – molecular – weight alcohols are the primary activators, including methanol and ethanol, which need to be mixed with water: 5% water added to 95% methanol or ethanol works effectively. Higher molecular weight alcohols, such as propanol or butanol, are less effective for activation.

Though low – molecular – weight ketones like acetone can function as activators, their strong smell and low flash point restrict industrial coating applications.

For activators with low odor and high flash points, propylene carbonate is a good choice, boasting a 242℃ flash point and very little odor.
