What is Organoclay (Organophilic Bentonite)?

Organoclay is an organophilic bentonite obtained by modifying natural montmorillonite clay with organic quaternary ammonium compounds. It acts as a high-efficiency rheology modifier and thixotropic agent, widely used in solvent-based and water-based systems.

Organoclay rheology modifier for modern formulations

In coatings, inks, greases and drilling fluids, controlling rheology is critical. Organoclay builds a reversible 3D structure in the liquid, generating yield value and thixotropy. This structure prevents settling during storage while allowing easy application under shear.

Compared with traditional thickeners, organoclay (organic bentonite) offers excellent anti-settling performance, broad compatibility and competitive cost, making it a preferred rheology solution in many industrial formulations.

  • High thixotropy and sag resistance.
  • Excellent suspension and anti-settling behavior.
  • Suitable for medium to high polarity systems (and special grades for low polarity oils).
  • Can partially replace cellulose, fumed silica and other rheology additives.

Main Applications of Organoclay

Organoclay (organophilic bentonite) rheology modifiers are used in a wide range of industries where suspension, anti-settling and thixotropy are required.

Industrial & Protective Coatings
Organoclay helps control sagging and settling in high-solids coatings, epoxy primers, marine and heavy duty anti-corrosion paints. It improves edge coverage and film uniformity.
Printing Inks & Flexo / Gravure
In ink systems, organoclay provides thixotropy and anti-settling, improving transfer, dot sharpness and press stability while reducing misting and splashing.
Lubricating Greases
Organoclay can be used as a non-melting thickener in greases. It builds a strong structure, improves high-temperature performance and reduces oil separation in storage and operation.
Oilfield Drilling Fluids
Organophilic clay is widely used in oil-based and synthetic-based drilling fluids to provide suspension, improve carrying capacity and enhance wellbore stability.
Adhesives, Sealants & Other Systems
Organoclay improves anti-sagging and filler suspension in adhesives, sealants, putties and other thick formulations where rheology control is critical.

Organoclay FAQ

Frequently asked questions about organoclay / organophilic bentonite and how to use organoclay in different systems.

How do I activate organoclay in solvent-based systems?
Organoclay usually requires proper dispersion and activation. In solvent-based systems, it is recommended to add organoclay as a pre-gel or disperse it under high shear together with polar activators (such as alcohol or acetate) to fully develop the rheology.
Can organoclay be used in water-based coatings?
Yes. Special grades of organoclay are designed for water-based systems. They are usually pre-dispersed in water under high shear, and can be used together with other water-based thickeners to adjust flow and leveling while preventing settling.
Is organoclay compatible with my existing formulation?
Compatibility depends on system polarity, resin type and solvent composition. Share your formulation details with us, and we will recommend a suitable organoclay grade and activation method based on our application experience.
