Organoclay in automotive industry plays a vital role in both water – based and solvent – based systems, though its mechanisms of action differ between the two.

In water – based automotive coatings, a key application area, organoclay (including organically modified bentonite) functions through a unique process.

When the flaky aggregates of bentonite are dispersed at high speed in water or water mixed with additives/solvents, the edge charges and face charges of the dispersed bentonite flakes attract each other, forming a “house – of – cards” structure.

This structure is the reason why organoclay provides thixotropy in water – based automotive systems, ensuring smooth application, and enables the arrangement of aluminum powder, which is crucial for achieving the desired finish and appearance in automotive paints.
