In the realm of paints, organoclay’s performance relies heavily on careful preparation parameters that guarantee its quality.

For organoclay used in paints, achieving the right slurry concentration during production is essential to ensure bentonite disperses fully. Excessively high concentrations lead to poor dispersion, affecting ion exchange with organic ammonium salts, while overly low concentrations, though aiding dispersion, raise costs due to higher water consumption—hence the typical 5% – 7% range.

Proper temperature control is also crucial; around 65℃ optimizes the exchange reaction between organic ammonium cations and bentonite’s exchangeable cations. Reaction time, which depends on factors like slurry concentration and temperature, can range from 0.5 hours to multiple hours.

It’s best determined via testing after other process conditions are fixed to maximize organoclay’s efficacy in paint formulations.
