The scientific selection and ratio of polar activators directly determine the activation effect of organic bentonite.

A 95/5 acetone/water mixture has been validated through extensive experiments as the optimal choice. Acetone, as a strong polar solvent, can rapidly penetrate between bentonite layers, promoting layer separation; a small amount of water (5%) facilitates cation dissociation through hydrogen bonding, enhancing compatibility with base oils.

The activator addition must be strictly controlled at 2%-3% of the total formulation (equivalent to 20%-30% of the bentonite weight). Insufficient addition results in inadequate activation, with gel strength decreasing by 40%; excessive addition leads to acetone residue volatilization, causing grease porosity and compromising structural stability.

A certain company once experienced a significant decline in grease water resistance due to an incorrect activator ratio (water content reached 15%), resulting in emulsion failure in humid environments. The issue was completely resolved after adjusting the formulation ratio.
