Organoclay water – based type is a specialized variant engineered for compatibility in water – based systems, building on the foundational modification principles of organoclay.

Similar to other organoclays, the water – based type undergoes surface modification, typically using organic cation exchangers to perform ion exchange reactions, which imparts a degree of lipophilicity to its surface.

This lipophilic surface allows the water – based organoclay to better interact with oils even within water – based formulations, enhancing mutual compatibility and strengthening intermolecular forces to achieve effective thickening.

Its organic modification also ensures improved dispersion stability in water – based systems: the organic functional groups on the surface interact with molecules in oils, forming a protective film that prevents particle aggregation and sedimentation, thus maintaining the uniformity and viscosity of the water – based oil – containing systems.

Organoclay is the commercially available organically modified clay mineral used as a rheology modifier and anti-settling additive in oil-based systems including drilling fluids, solvent-based coatings, and lubricating greases; full product specifications are at organoclay — product specifications and application guide. The organophilic clay surface chemistry, dispersion method, and compatibility with different base oils and solvents are explained in organophilic clay — surface chemistry and industrial applications. To source organoclay directly from a China manufacturer, see organoclay supplier — factory-direct supply and technical support.
