As a rheological agent, organoclay for paint is a powdery material, and microscopically, it is composed of aggregated clay flake piles.

A great many organic long – chain compounds are attached to both sides of the clay flakes, and these compounds improve the compatibility with paint resins.

The number and variety of these organic long – chain compounds decide which paint types the organoclay is suitable for, including low – polarity, medium – polarity, high – polarity, medium – high polarity, and universal systems.

When dispersed and activated, the hydroxyl groups on the edges of neighboring flakes are linked by water molecules, creating a thixotropic network structure that shows a gel state on a macroscopic scale.

The absence of water molecules means that a robust gel structure cannot be formed, highlighting the importance of water in its functionality within paint formulations.
