In low – shear mud plant use, organoclay derived from sodium – based bentonite stands out due to its enhanced properties over calcium – based bentonite.

Sodium – based bentonite boasts higher expansibility and cation exchange capacity, disperses well in water, and features a high colloid price, along with excellent viscosity, lubricity, and thermal stability. Its good thixotropy, hot wet tensile strength, and dry compressive strength further enhance its suitability for low – shear mud processes in plants, making it more effective and valuable in practical use. However, in China, calcium – based bentonite makes up about 80% of total reserves, while sodium – based bentonite reserves are much less abundant, which influences its application in low – shear mud plants.
